Portuguese wines

Port Wine is produced from grapes of the Douro Demarcated Region and differs from other wines because of its origin and its fermentation process. The fermentation of this wine takes only two to four days and it’s stopped with the addition of wine brandy. Throughout this fermentation process, natural grape sugars do not transform entirely into alcohol and Port Wine is created.

It is classified into different categories according to its aging type. The four main categories are: White, Ruby, Tawny and Rose. The special categories are LBV, Reserva, Crusted, Colheita, Vintage and old Tawnies.

At Portfolio stores you can find a big selection of brands such as Sandeman, Poças, Kopke, Niepoort and even our own Port Wine brand.

In each of our stores in Lisbon, Porto, Faro and Funchal airports you can find a corner dedicated to the Port Wine.  Take the best of this wine’s versatility.  You can enjoy it alone or you can pair it with different foods and happenings. It can be much more than a digestif. You can serve a White Port as an aperitif to go along with olives or dried fruits. During a meal, White Port matches perfectly with salads or fish and a LBV goes well with a roast or a steak. Desserts like cake or chocolate mousse can be paired with a LBV and more traditional sweets can be enjoyed with a Tawny. With cheese, you can pick a Ruby or a LBV if it’s a medium intensity cheese or an older Tawny if the cheese is more intense.

Port Wine can also be an ingredient to a variety of recipes. It happens with the Port Wine chocolates from Portfolio brand, available on our stores.

To bring the best of this special wine to our customers, at Portfolio we already had some wine tasting events in partnership with Instituto do Vinho do Douro e do Porto so that our visitors can try different brands. Have a look at our agenda and drop by at one of our tastings.
