Portugal is full of aromas and flavors, but perhaps none concentrates our essence better than a glass of good wine. It’s amazing how a relatively small country like Portugal can exhibit such variety of wines. The universe of Portuguese wines is as rich and vast as the landscapes that enchant visitors from north to south of the country, from the terraced vineyards of the Douro, to the Alentejo plains, and the vineyards of the Azores and Madeira. Each place has its beauty and its uniqueness. Just like wine.
The number of grape varieties (250 in all) is one of the great advantages of Portuguese wines, which are going through a moment of international expansion and recognition. According to data from the International Organization of Vine and Wine, and despite the fact that it’s a country of small wineries, Portugal is already the 11th largest producer in the world and the 8th largest exporter, in a ranking led by France.
The trend points to a sustained year-on-year growth in sales to international markets: in 2017, Portuguese wine sales abroad exceeded 778.7 million euros. Port wine still represents the largest share of these sales, but the truth is that it’s the still wines that sustain the sector’s overall growth, and consequently exports.
But Portuguese wines do not only grow in quantity. For Portugal, diversity can make all the difference. Portugal is the third country in the world with the largest variety of grape varieties, with 31 unique Registered Designations of Origin, which are all unique, and this allows the production of a great diversity of wines, with matchless characteristics, recognized by their quality, especially in niche markets for Top Wines.
Whereas just a few years ago the only Portuguese wines with international fame were Porto and Madeira, today the reality is totally different: the world surrenders to the personality of the Douro, the vivacity of the Vinho Verde (naturally sparkling wines), the charm of the Alentejo and Dão regions.
